Band 9 Sample Answer (425 words)

One of the most memorable events in my life took place about four years ago, when I participated in my university’s annual cultural festival. It was a three-day event filled with music, art, debates, and performances, but the most unforgettable part for me was when my team and I won first prize in the inter-university debate competition.

To give you some background, I had always been fascinated by public speaking, but I was also extremely nervous about expressing my ideas in front of a large audience. When I first joined the debate club, I struggled with stage fright and often stumbled over my words. However, with constant practice and encouragement from my friends, I gradually built up confidence. The cultural festival became the perfect stage to put all that preparation into action.

The competition itself was intense. There were teams from different universities, each well-prepared and highly articulate. Our topic was about whether technological progress brings more advantages than disadvantages to society. I remember feeling my heart race as I stepped onto the stage, but once I began speaking, something just clicked. My arguments flowed smoothly, and I was able to respond confidently to counter-arguments from the opposing team. The energy in the room was electric, and the applause after each round gave me even more courage.

When the judges finally announced that we had won first place, I was completely overwhelmed with joy. I couldn’t believe that all the hours of practice had actually paid off. My teammates and I celebrated with laughter, hugs, and even a few tears of happiness. It was not just about the trophy but about the validation of our hard work and perseverance.

Looking back, this event is memorable not only because of the victory but also because of the transformation it brought in me. It marked the moment when I truly overcame my fear of public speaking. Since then, I have become much more confident in presenting ideas, whether in class, at work, or in casual discussions.

In short, that debate competition during my university festival will always stand out in my memory. It taught me the value of preparation, teamwork, and self-belief. More importantly, it showed me that pushing beyond my comfort zone could lead to personal growth and unforgettable experiences.
